What muscles are you working on in your life?

If you want to create a better body, you must work on all of your muscles, and like a body-builder, if we want to create a better life full of health, wealth and happiness, we must work on all areas of our lives.

Similar to biceps, triceps and abdominals, your will power and self-discipline are like muscles, and in order for them to grow you must work on them.

Every private victory you have with yourself, whether that be resisting that chocolate bar, going for the morning run or reading that book you said you would finish, is a rep, and the more reps you do the stronger your muscles will become.

Desire, self-discpline, will power, strength of character and positive habits; these are all muscles that can be worked on, and it is very important that we continuously exercise them, bettering ourselves and bettering our lives.

Jeff Olson sums it up nicely in the book ‘Slight Edge’…

PP + PA + PA+ PR = PL

A Positive Philosophy (PP) is everything you know and what you know,
A Positive Attitude (PA) is how you hold the things that you know (how you perceive the world and what thoughts you think),
Positive Actions (PA) are how those things affect what you do,
Positive Results (PR) are the reaction of those actions,
These positive results over and over again equate to a Positive Lifestyle (PL).

So if we want a positive lifestyle, we must work on the small things, the way we think, the places we go, the books we read, the way we act and this all adds up to create the lifestyle that we want.

1+1=2.

This is one of my favourite sayings, meaning that life is simple, you put one foot in front of the other and that is how you move forward.

Yes there will be bumps in the road, congestion, hills, traffic lights etc. And this is where you use those muscles that you have been working on, your self-discipline, your will power, good habits and various positive characteristics.

Success road

Alongside this you have what I like to call ‘your superpowers’:

  1. The power of why – Why do you want to achieve your goals? Why do you want to better your life? On the surface these seem like simple questions, but when you dig a little deeper you can find your cause, your reason, something that will fuel the fire inside of you that will help you push through when the going gets tough. Find it and don’t let it go.
  2. The Power of the Universe – ‘The universe always says yes’. ‘Seek and you shall find’. ‘When you squeeze a lemon you get lemon juice’. These sayings may sound trivial, but the reason they have been so popular for so long is because they’re true. The universe gives you what you ask for, be sure to be asking for the right thing. Have you ever read the book The Alchemist? If not, go and read it.
  3. The Power of Visualization – Although he isn’t a very popular man at the moment, (well depending on who you speak to), Donald Trump once said ‘If your reality begins with your dreams, then your dreams will become your reality’. This is true, the power of seeing yourself where you want to be should not be underestimated, it is very important to write out your goals, create a vision board, you have to see, smell, breathe and feel yourself in the position you want to be in.

Below is a motivational talk I did at Coventry University where I shared how the three superpowers can help you achieve your goals.
